Emergency Medical Technician- Basic Program

Classes meet for three hours in duration, 2 - 3 sessions a week. All students are given a course syllabus at class orientation. The course follows the 1994 National Standard Curriculum and is 170 hours in duration.
Class Description
The Emergency Medical Technician Basic course covers all aspects of the 1994 DOT National curriculum. Training is 170 hours in length, which includes 24 hours of clinical time.
All students receive instruction in patient assessment for the medical and trauma patients anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, oxygen therapy, non-medicated IV maintenance, blood glucose monitoring, SpO2 monitoring, respiratory emergencies, cardiac emergencies, basic and advanced splinting techniques, bleeding control, diabetic emergencies, child birth, pediatric assessment, burns, environmental emergencies, principles of vehicle rescue, care for fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, application of dressings and bandages, patient documentation skills, and awareness level hazardous materials emergencies.
All students who pass this course with an 80% will be eligible to take the Kentucky EMT – Basic skills test and the National Registry of EMT’s written examination.
Cost of Course
The tuition for the course is $725.00. This fee covers instructor cost only and is due at class orientation. Each student will need to purchase a textbook and workbook at an approximate cost of $125.00 from the campus bookstore. At this time, we are using the AAOS 10th Edition textbook and workbook. Each student will also need to either acquire or purchase a blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, and pocket face mask. If these supplies need to be purchased, we offer those through the State Fire Rescue Training Department at a cost of $45.00.
There are additional Certification fees that have to be paid to NREMT and KBEMS. Below is a breakdown of the new Fee Schedule as of July 1, 2009:
Application Fee: $10.00 (payable to KBEMS) due the first day/night of class.
Certification Fee: $30.00 (payable to KBEMS) due at the end of class.
NREMT Exam Fee: $75.00 (NREMT) due at the end of class.
The student will also need a background check to provide to KBEMS before final testing. The amount and where to obtain the background check will be discussed at orientation.
Certification
Any student successfully completing all course requirements will be eligible to take the State Practical Skills exam and the National Registry test. Both tests are required for initial certification of all Kentucky EMT-Basics. Listed below are the requirements for certification in the State of Kentucky.

Are set forth in KAR 7:301
Each applicant shall:
Understand, read, speak, and write the English language with a comprehension and performance level equal to at least the ninth grade of education;
Not currently be subject to disciplinary action pursuant to KRS 311A that would prevent certification;
Hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or learners permit;
Be at least 18 years of age;
Hold a high school diploma or GED;
Complete an EMT Basic course taught using the DOT 1994 NSC;
Obtain NREMT registration as a NREMT-B within 2 years of completion of the course;
Submit a completed and signed “Emergency Medical Technician Initial Certification Application”;
Present written evidence of completion of current HIV/AIDS training required by KRS 311A.110;
Pay the fees required by 202 KAR 7:030;
Present written evidence of completion of current training in CPR
